We have been communicating visually for about 40.000 years through pictures in caves and carvings in stone. You could go so far as saying that illustrator is one of the world's oldest occupations (I know it’s not, but we have been creating art and images for ages).
This is one of the reasons why pictures and visuals still are stronger than a thousand words. Sending a smiley instead of typing down some words in a message makes more sense, it's more direct and it speaks to our emotions and to our hearts 💛
We later on in history developed a language and an alphabet where we could communicate in a different, more precise and direct way. But it would still take several thousands of years until writing and reading became a common known skill. Today about 17% of the world's adult population is still illiterate.
These days the larger part of the population are able to read and write and we are communicating like never before. Internet has made the world a smaller place and also more crowded. Almost anyone can publish a blog, write an email, send a text, start a facebook page, write a tweet or an article. We are creating a lot of online noise that we have to endure on a daily basis, there is an information overload. People have started to filter out information while browsing the web and are getting more and more picky before clicking on any link.
To grab attention online and to stand out has gotten harder, in 1995 less than 1% of the world's population had an internet connection. Today in 2016 it’s around 40%. It has grown a lot and it's still growing. And as if this wasn't enough your brain’s online attention span has decreased from 12 seconds in 2000 to only 8 seconds according to a study done in Canada 2015 by Microsoft. That's one second shorter than a goldfish’s memory span.
It is important to be seen, to be seen is to be heard, to be heard is to exist. The world is moving fast and the way we communicate online is changing in a steady pace. What I’m trying to say is; to be able to grab someone's attention is more difficult now than ever before with shorter attention spans and all the online noise. That's why illustrations can be used as a great tool to be seen and stand out in the crowded digital world. One picture thousand words remember?
Illustrations will not only help you stand out it will also bring a artistic value to your products/services/brands. And custom illustrations tailored for your article/news update/project etc will enrich the story and speak to the hearts of the reader.
So what do you get for hiring an illustrator? You'll get a voice, a feeling, an artistic and emotional value, you will look more interesting and appealing to the main crowd and last but not least you will be more remembered.
